The Pursuit of Happyness is one of the most inspirational movies I’ve watched. It’s based on a true story, and that’s the story of Chris Gardner which is played by Will Smith. The movie is filled with gems and great takeaways and I’m gonna share with you my 3 takeaways.

Let’s start with the first one!
Look at those who are less fortunate

To be grateful for what you have you must look at those who are less fortunate. Throughout the movie we see Chris Gardner, going through difficult situations one after the other. But the scene where he went to jail and had to leave his son with his ex because he was not able to pay his parking tickets?! that scene really hit me. 

And, when I read more on Chris Gardner’s life, I found out that he was put in jail for 10 days because of the parking tickets, and he was not able to pay them because every dollar that he made from cutting grass while being unemployed had to go to either the rent or the parking tickets, and of course he had to try to maintain a roof over his family. 

After that his ex wife left him and his son because of their financial difficulties and just when things couldn’t get any worse his landlord called the cops to get him out of the apartment for late rent payments. 

So he and his son stayed in a motel until they got kicked out that as well and became officially homeless and had to stay in public shelters for the homeless. 

The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for it is the best way not to belittle the favors of Allah.”

When we look at all of, or even one of the challenges that Chris Gardner faced, it reminds us to be grateful that our challenges are way smaller than others, and we are blessed to not have to worry about where we will sleep because we are homeless and have only $ 15 left in the bank account. So just like how Khabib Nurmagomedov would say it we should all always say Alhamdulillah!

Protect Your Dream

At probably the most famous scene of the movie we see Chris playing basketball with his son and then his son says he wants to become a basketball player when he grows up but then Chris as his father tells him it can’t be done. 
Few moments later he notices the negative impact of the comment he made to his son and then told his son to never let anyone discourage him from his dream not even him as his father. 

He then said people will tell you, you can’t do something because they can’t do it and that’s why you should always protect your dream. You want something you go get it. Period. 

Such a powerful message that reminds you to protect your dream. Only you can protect it from dying by continuing to believe in it by what you do and not what you say. 

A lot of people say they believe in their dream but you’ll quickly know how much they believe in their dream by how much they invest into their dream and how much they sacrifice from their time and more importantly from their money. 

NEVER Give Up

One thing we see distinctive with Chris Gardener’s story is that despite the hardship he went through he never lost belief in himself and continued to make effort with the hope for a better tomorrow. 

While he was sleeping with his son in the subway toilet it would have been difficult for him to imagine that one day he’ll be having firms in different states and he’ll be able to give out so much charity and help so many people because he never gave up on himself and always gave his best into what he believed in. 

Chris Gardener is another great example of how people can start from very unfortunate beginnings but through many years of perseverance were able to build themselves up to become very successful and more importantly contributing member of their community.
